Chairman's Corner
Welcome to the second edition of the Harcourt Herald, a monthly newsletter from The Tararua Sports Club and Upper Hutt City Soccer. The aim of the newsletter is to give club members, supporters and anyone interested in soccer in the Upper Hutt area information on what is going on across the club and soccer in general.
The season is in full swing now, and although the weather has played havoc with some games, there have not been too many games cancelled and our pitches in Upper Hutt have been holding up well. The same cannot be said of some of the Wellington grounds, and in recent weeks Capital Football have been transferring Wellington team’s home games out to grounds in the Hutt Valley, which may cause us some problems as the season continues. Football is becoming the victim of its own success right around the Wellington region with playing numbers at record highs. Juniors are up 2.6% and seniors a huge 7% on last year, but the numbers of grounds available to Football have not increased at the same pace. Whilst in Upper Hutt we are blessed with good quality pitches at Harcourt Park, Awakairangi Park, TMP and Kiwi Street to name a few, we also want to see the Upper Hutt City Council free up additional council assets for the use of our football club due to our growing membership numbers, particularly at senior level. As a result we have made a submission to the Council as part of their annual planning process, to have Elbow Park (across the bridge from the clubrooms) turned into a football facility, which would include additional floodlight training facilities and one or two pitches. This would then create a “Football Corridor” from Awakarangi Park right through to Harcourt Park. The mayor and councilors received our submission, by our president Chris Waite, in a positive fashion so we now await the outcomes of the annual plan to see whether the council also shares our dreams for Elbow Park.
Over the past month the Executive Committee has been focusing on continuing the development of our Strategic Plan, rebuilding the Governance Structure and reviewing the club’s constitution. Once these activities are completed in draft form, we will be seeking feedback from our members, with our aim to take these initiatives forward to our Annual General Meeting for ratification in December. We have also been active in the sponsorship and funding areas, with the Kiwisaver for Kids initiative in particular getting some good support from our junior members. More details on these initiatives are included in this newsletter. The Committee is also exploring the requirements of becoming a member of ClubMark, an ACC led NZ wide initiative to lift the standards of sporting clubs across the country. There are a number of criteria that need to be achieved (subject to an annual audit) in areas such as host responsibility, healthy eating/drinking, fair play, strong rules and governance and sound financial planning. Achieving membership of ClubMark not only increases our chances of Grant funding, it also ensures we are running our football club at best practice levels in a long term sustainable fashion.
To the playing side, we continue to perform well right across our Men's, Women's and juniors. The Men’s first team has just come off a great win against top of the table Tawa 2-1, and is now placed in mid table within striking distance of the leaders. Our American imports, Brian Pasierb and Andy Cooper have settled in well, and their passion and commitment is rubbing off on the rest of the lads, and from what I have seen the team is playing the best football we have seen from our Men’s first team for a few years. Congratulations should also go to coach Ian Porteous, who in his first season with us is starting to improve the quality of our players at all levels. The women continue to perform well in the Central League, and in coach Wendi Henderson we have the Upper Hutt Sportswomen of the year. More on this in the newsletter.
The juniors are also having their usual strong season, with at least 3 of our JPL sides looking likely to make the exclusive “Super Six” finale to the season. The selection process has also just been completed for the Upper Hutt Soccer Academy, which is held each Thursday morning at Upper Hutt college, congratulations to all those who made the squad of 26, it is also great this year to see 8 girls part of the academy, and from what I saw of last week’s training they are certainly giving some of the boys a run for their money!
On a sobering note, it is extremely frustrating to see so many ex-Upper Hutt juniors now playing senior football in the Central League for the likes of Lower Hutt, Petone and Western Suburbs. At last count over 20 kids have left Upper Hutt to go and play at a higher level over recent years it just shows how critical it is that we get our Men’s first team playing in the Central League, and then we can work hard at retaining our talented youngsters by offering them football at the highest level. I know in talking too many of the ones who have left, they would come back in droves if we could achieve Central League status.
I hope you enjoy the newsletter this month, and if you get a chance come down and watch our Men’s or Women’s first teams playing at home at Harcourt Park, if the recent games are any indication you will be treated to some great football.
King regards

Upper City Council Draft Annual Plan 2008/2009Upgrade of Ngati Tama Park
A presentation was made to the Upper Hutt City Council to consider the upgrade of Ngati Tama Park as part of their 2008/2009 Annual Plan
The proposal was first presented by Ian Maudesley last year for consideration by Council and I took the opportunity to address the full Council during the first round of submissions a couple of weeks ago.
Below is a summary of the submission:-
Proposal:The upgrade of Ngati Tama Park (Totara Park) to provide Upper Hutt City Soccer with a designated and purpose designed Training Facility
General Scope of Work:
Stage One
Re-levelling of this area to a suitable standard estimated at a minimum of $130,000, to be funded by Upper Hutt City Council
Stage Two
Installation of Flood Lighting to be funded by Upper Hutt City Soccer
Inadequate Current Facilities
Upper Hutt City Soccer has approximately 1000 Playing Members, comprising 800 Junior and 200 Senior. A total of over 70 Teams
Assigned Training facilities comprise a floodlit area at Awakairangi Park suitable for 1 Team only and a floodlit area at Harcourt Park suitable for 1-2 Teams only
Due to facility limitations most of the Senior Players cannot train.
Due to facility limitations training area usage is limited and restricted.
Many Junior Teams try to find space around grounds to train.
Typical winter weather places further restriction on available training resources to the point where most just cannot train at all.
Club Growth and Aspirations
Already Upper Hutt City Soccer is one of the largest Soccer Clubs in NZ. We know that playing numbers are already on the rise and we expect this to continue. In fact Soccer is experiencing growth throughout the region and currently is struggling for enough grounds and facilities to support the numbers playing the sport.
Our 2 year goal is to have our Senior Men’s 1st Team again competing in the top flight competition. Currently we compete in Premier League which is the next level down. Our Women’s 1st Team are already competing at the highest level.
Improving Training Facilities is fundamental to our future. Improving Training Facilities is fundamental to the Sport and we have an obligation to our players to provide adequate facilities and to offer a Club progression into the highest playing grade available
Ngati Tama Park
Ngati Tama Park is located at the northern end of Awakairangi Park. It is protected by the stop bank and as such is not on the flood plain which is important when considering such an investment. Currently the Park is not utilised at all. Its’ close vicinity to both Harcourt and Awakairangi Parks means it lies within what we can term the Soccer belt and therefore is perhaps a logical choice for such an upgrade.
Our Clubs Stability
Upper Hutt City Soccer is a well run Organisation. We have built up Club reserves over the years whilst still managing to fund our annual operational costs, which is a significant achievement considering out turnover is now hundreds of thousand of dollars.
Our Clubrooms at Harcourt Park are freehold and were built with the assistance and support of the Council some 11 years ago this year.
This year the Club will begin an initiative with a United States University, bringing over 2 Players to join our Senior Men’s First team. We are serious about our future and ask that the Council support us in our endeavours through the needed development of a dedicated Training Facility.
We need to take as much pressure off the existing parks and grounds as possible to protect the venues for competition play.
Value
This proposed development will be a significant asset to Sport and Recreation in the City, address a significant problem that needs a solution and be welcomed by close to 1000 families within Upper Hutt, just in considering those families directly associated to Upper City Soccer. No doubt such a facility will be of use to others outside of Upper Hutt City Soccer.
We ask that the Council consider this submission seriously as if we were to look at wants and needs throughout this process; this one clearly falls in the Needs Category. It is a problem that needs a solution and this can be achieved with the commitment to a modest sum of money and the time to act is now.
You also have the benefit of the Soccer Club’s commitment to seek funding for the installation of Flood Lighting, in doing so adding further value to the facility and collectively promoting a joint venture attitude to progress in our City, in return I am certain that your support will be reciprocated in due course.
As it stands the initial presentation was not considered successfully by Council and no funding has been put forward in the 2008/2009 Draft Annual Plan for this work. However, following the submission process the Council may reconsider this work so it is a matter of continuing to present our case and push for action. As a Club, as Individuals and as Rate Payers we therefore need to be talking to the Councillors as our elected representatives and canvass their support.
Regards
Chris Waite

men's club captain comment
What a great start to the second half of the season for Ian and the first team squad. It was good to see the clubrooms full with teams returning from away games creating a great atmosphere. I’m sure the hard work that everybody is putting in will continue to pay dividends for the rest of the season.
The nursery grade continues to thrive on Saturday mornings with around 65 under 6’s turning up for coaching. Additional coaches are needed for the nursery grade, so if you have got an hour to spare on Sat mornings to help with the kids please contact John Blaikie.
Andy Cooper and Brian Pasierb (American Imports) are fitting in well with the club; both are involved with coaching on Wed and Fri afternoons at TMP. We are hoping to get all the junior teams through TMP with Andy and Brian.
In their "time off" Andy and Brian are experiencing some good NZ hospitality which included a trip to West Pac Stadium to watch The All Blacks v Ireland (Their first ever rugby game!)
The Premier League is again at home this week against Western Suburbs, here’s hoping for full clubrooms again.
One last bit of housekeeping, traditionally the entire balcony of the clubrooms has been used as the smoking area, we would now ask that the far end of the balcony be used as our designated smoking area. We appreciate your assistance in continuing to make your clubrooms an even better environment for everybody.
Good luck to all teams this coming weekend
Cheers
Tony

sponsorship news
One of the hardest tasks for any club is to secure sponsorship outside of funding from gaming grants/trusts.
The next hardest task is to put approximately 1000 (Senior and Junior) players on the field each week with the right playing equipment, added to that there is the back office area where things like renovations/improvements to clubrooms and the items that make the club tick are required.
The club has a couple of good initiatives going at the moment with the help of Mortgage Link – Sandra and Kevin Algar - (see attached flyer) who will assist in home loan top-ups and new loans and Crest Financial Brokers/Kiwisaver Specialists who are assisting with getting your children enrolled in Kiwisaver so they do not miss out on the $1000.00 start-up package.
But it does not stop there, we have a number of sponsorship options, ranging from junior kit to sponsorship of the men’s and women’s Senior 1st team, still available so if you are keen to get involved and help make a difference please contact Ali James (ali7shar8@xtra.co.nz) and discuss where you would like to help.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have already offered sponsorship and all existing sponsors. Without your help this club would not be as successful as it is.
A special mention must go to Silicon Systems who kindly donated a PC to the club as a replacement of our current and rather antiquated one.

The RJ’s (I still don’t know what the name stands for!)
After a tough start to the season the team has settled down nicely and is producing the goods.
Pleasingly Big Pete has got a good size squad together & is managing to put out a full team every week & we even have sub’s available (most weeks anyway).
Last week the team showed some real character in turning around a 5-2 beating from the Karori Slapperz 3 weeks ago to win 3-0 against the same team in the freezing cold & wet at Awaikairangi. In fact some of the hardiest players then went on to endure the bloody cold showers and went straight into Welly to support the All Blacks and down a few Tequila’s in Courtney place.
Mike Glensor has been a great addition to the team when he is available to play. It’s good to have a hardworking target man for the team to look for in addition to Ollie & Craig.
Probably fair to say that some of the older players are showing their age & occasionally slipping into questionable tactics to hold up the school kids that keep running at them!
The team has a good vibe about it right now & more good results are expected as the old fellas head toward some form of match fitness & continue to work at playing the ball around with some class.
Thanks Steve Matthews
HILDERS MAURADERS
The Marauders
"It’s a funny old game'' is a phrase that may well have originated from someone who has witnessed
The Marauders over a game / season or two.
What a bunch of Marauders we are!!
Capable of 'sublime' skill that, in an instant and with no apparent reason disappear without a trace, Pure Magic perhaps!! Always vocal in support and dismay!!!!!
Yet we love the game. The sheer commitment from all involved is a credit to the club. Colleen’s Army go to places that only the Brave or Foolhardy would dare. Then return to tell the tale, albeit a little exaggerated sometimes.
This season has started well. We are currently up amongst the leaders, although we are becoming the draw specialists of late. As we approach the 1/2 way mark, our aim must be to venture forth into the Last Frontier's and enjoy such moment's of Magic from Hank & John 'Rocky' Hilder, when one passes to the other only to be berated for doing so. "PRICELESS".
On a personal note, it’s a pleasure to be part of it....GO THE MARAUDERS

senior women's talk
Ladies 1st team
The Women’s Central League side has had an up and down season so far which is reflected in our current 3rd placing in the league, smack bang in the middle. The one constant theme for us so far has been the realisation that squads win leagues, not teams or individuals. Without the competitive nature for starting 11 spots, teams lose their spark and passion, but for us, experiencing injuries and player unavailability has brought us closer together and has on occasion allowed us to grind out results when we needed them. It’s also strengthened our relationship with the Women’s 2nd team, who have a great mix of youth and experience, and will provide future Central League teams with talent in coming years.
Our last 4 games have included 2 wins and 2 losses, most recently we travelled to Palmerston North to play Massey, who have been a bit of a bogey team for us up there in seasons past. True to form, we played a lot of the football but could only hit the back of the net once, the result a disappointing 1-2 loss. Prior to this, we defeated a 10 player Miramar 5-1, lost to Marist at home 0-1 and beat a youthful Lower Hutt side 4-2 at Bell Park. Overall we’ve played some fantastic football, and lost, and played some average football and won, but I guess in the end that’s football.
I believe one area for concern in terms of the Central League this year would have to be the standard of the officials. In some cases it has been appalling, and certainly not of a standard befitting Central League status (men’s or women’s). I fully support development of referees for the region; however Central League is the highest local club competition available for females and therefore should not be used as a learning/training forum for new referees & assistant referees. I don’t believe it would be acceptable in the men’s equivalent league, nor should it be in ours.
On a higher note, it’s great to see the club thriving and plenty of people getting down to watch the games both men and women. The committee and everyone that works behind the scenes creates our environment, and there is nothing better as a player than having pride in your club and its people and facilities, even if the results on the park don’t always go your way.
Cheers
Gibby
Ladies 2nd team
With the inclusion of a lot of new faces (but let’s not exclude the old gals – Mary that’s you) the team is starting to come together. The season started off with the team winning their first game against Petone 5 – 1. This was a great start but it only proved to get harder from there on in with the team only winning that one game in the first round. Not all the games were a walkover as we made them earn every goal.
With the countless injury list building, we were starting to wonder if we would be able to field a team from week to week, but this was soon to be remedied with the inclusion of the odd player from the Womens 1st team (thanks to Kelly and in particular Manu you’ve been a star!). This has been a real help as some of our injured players are yet to return to the field.
Last week saw the start of the second round and the team playing Petone again. This was hard fought with Petone having a couple of great breakaway attempts at goal. The final score was 1 – 0 to Upper Hutt which showed that we were not a team that should be taken lightly. There were many outstanding performances with everyone contributing which resulted in a great game - hard fought but in good spirit.
The team was happy with the win but remain focused on the remainder of the season. It will be a tough one from here in but hopefully it will be an injury free one.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Shane Benge for all the hard work that he is putting into this team. I know it is a struggle at times but we will get there, there is still plenty of room for improvement.
Cheers Tina Gray
message from the juniors
This season we have 60 teams playing in local and regional competitions that’s over 600 players playing anywhere from Island Bay to Masterton and Waikanae. Our player numbers are up this year and if you’ve seen the press reports, you’ll know that numbers are up at both a junior and senior level across the board. Whilst it’s fantastic that our sport is increasing in popularity it places further pressure on ground availability, equipment availability and administration of the game.
I’d just like to focus on the ground availability as I’m often asked why some grades / games are cancelled and not others.
The number of grounds hasn’t increased in proportion to the number of teams and the grounds in Wellington are used far more and appear to be in a far worse state than the grounds in the Hutt Valley. Add to this the changes to the field sizes which started this year and will continue over the next few years. The aim is to move to smaller sided games on smaller pitches with a view to giving all players more touches of the ball and thereby increasing their skill level.
Last week we saw 13th JPL and 14th JPL & Promo cancelled this was due to the state of the pitches and restrictions put on them by local councils. Last weekend was wet in most places and those pitches that were used only once or twice were OK but pitches like Awakairangi 3 which had two junior games and then a senior game in the afternoon was badly cut up.
The good news is that most of the smaller pitches used by 11th grade down are looking good in the Hutt Valley, I’m sure there will be exceptions but certainly the grounds I’ve seen still look in great condition. These grades should be spared any cancellations due to insufficient good grounds being available. There is little we can do about this issue other than hopefully understand it a little bit more.
Good luck for the rest of the season

I’d like to say a big thank you to all the coaches and managers in this grade. I know that it’s not easy sometimes to find the time to fit in all that comes with being a coach and/or a manger. The season so far has run very smoothly thanks to all your efforts.
The teams in our grade have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to attend skills training sessions run by John Blaikie, receive coaching assistance from Ian Porteous as well as attend training sessions run by Andy Cooper (Coop) and Brian Pasierb.
Best of luck to everyone for the rest of the season and fingers crossed for some more sunny Saturdays and no more cancellations!

UH Maidstone Sports Power
The season has been progressing well and although the team is without a win this year I feel that each week the team is improving and playing some excellent football.
We have some very talented players in the team with Ben Wood and Cole Jones being very strong in our defensive line. They are being supported by players such as Jack Mawdesley and Sam McKenzie playing up front with other players like Blake Sinden, Rebecca Otte and Layton Batchelor working hard on their game. Jordan Mills has been playing exceptionally well in goal.
Our word for the past few games has been "Commitment" - to defend our goal and get back and to create goal scoring opportunities. Last Saturday's game against a strong Stokes Valley team showed the teams determination to improve their game and to show us that commitment.
In a nail-biting first half we held them scoreless with some excellent team work to save what I thought were certain goals.
The input from our Director of Coaching, Ian Porteous, has been invaluable and the team really appreciates the time and effort he has given us this year during training.
I would also like to thank the Tararua Sports Club for giving the team the opportunity to have some training sessions with our two American players - Andy Cooper and Brian Pasierb. The team thoroughly enjoyed the session and "Coops" and Brian were excellent role models for the kids.
In finishing I would like to thank all our supporters and parents who come along to watch each weekend and to the team - Keep your spirits up and play with that commitment!
Regards Dave Burcher (coach)

B&P Engineering
The B&P team are a fantastic group of kids. They are really gelling together and are playing fantastically as a team. After being on the wrong end of some big scores at the beginning of the season, B&P’s fortunes changed when they scored a famous victory over the Upper Hutt Maidstone Sports team, the team that they train with. The team has now had successive draws in games, that with an ounce of luck, could have easily been wins.
B&P as a team are now playing with a lot of confidence. They are improving with every outing and are playing strong games that promise a lot for the rest of the season. Neil Sargisson (Coach)
United
With it coming close to the beginning of the season it was getting close that a netball coach may have to teach the team skills of soccer. Luckily a knight in shining armour called Jamie stepped in and took the reins. The team a brand new combination this year have started to gel well together, with a few wins under the belt. The girls we have in the team are really starting to make their mark in the game with no fear on talking on the opposition with a determined look in their eyes. The skills sessions that John Blakie is doing is helping to improve the skills for the members who are braving the colder nights on the Monday and it is starting to pay off. Thanks to the parents who have shown some strong support for the kids and their positive comments.

The nucleus of our team has been playing together for three years and this year our focus has been on team work and enjoying soccer for the game that it is. We rotate our players each week with everyone getting equal time in attack, defence and goalie. The support and encouragement that the players have given each other has made all the parents very proud of their children efforts. With the emphasis being on enjoyment but not overshadowing our desire to win the development of the players skills has also shone through. With more wins than losses under our belt the team is keen to get out there each week and give 100%.

Dollywash
The 9th grade Pinehaven team this year had many of the same boys from last year, with 3 new faces who have quickly become part of the team. It has been great seeing how much age and maturity has improved the boy’s skills and understanding of the game in only 6 months. We are very lucky to have Phil Dransfield as our coach again as it feels like we have just picked up where we left off last season. The Dolly wash boys have had a great season so far with only one loss to date.

Mortgage Link
After 3 Draws and 1 huge loss, the 9th Grade Mortgage Link Pumas had their first win of the season on 7th June. The boys are really starting to find their way and are adapting well to playing and staying in their positions. The boy’s teamwork is improving every game and their attitude and team spirit have made it very easy (most of the time) for David and myself to coach. A huge Thank You must go out to all of the parents for their tremendous support.

Leopards
It's great to reach this point in the season and look back and see how much the Leopards have improved as a team since our first game. While some of our team have played together for a few years others have joined us for the first time this year so our focus has been on bringing together our great individual skills to make a team which scores goals! We have been working on our positional play and the team are really starting to see the benefits of this both on the field and in the improving score. Everybody enjoyed the opportunity to learn some new skills from Andy Cooper and Brian Pasierb as well as having the chance to see some of their stylish footwork. We're looking forward to putting those skills into action on the field as the season progresses.

We started season off with a bit of a mixed bag, missed first game as the coach at wrong ground Dah!!!!!
We’ve played 5, lost 4 and drawn 1 to date. The results however are no reflection on the team as they are starting to play with a bit of pride and heart and I am sure they will get a result soon.

don't miss this opportunity
Hi everyone
Please take a few moments to take a look at a great opportunity we have to help raise funds within the club
$15 will go towards the purchase of new equipment for each child you register. In my case that means $60 will be donated to the club and my 4 children will all be registered for Kiwisaver with a $1.000 start up each. There is no age limit as anyone can join Kiwisaver and your children don't have to be club members. I see this as a huge win win for my family and the club.
So please support this initiative by completing the application below asap
Thanks

Dear Club Member
Crest Financial Brokers Ltd has proudly sponsored various sporting codes in the Hutt Valley over many years. We are now delighted to be able to offer benefits to the Upper Hutt Soccer Club members. We are offering a truly great opportunity to take full advantage of the benefits Kiwisaver can offer our junior members.
An early start works wonders!!! $1,000 Kickstart!!!
One of our Kiwisaver providers, Grosvenor Financial Services Group Ltd, is offering our clients the opportunity to enrol their children into Kiwisaver with absolutely no obligation for regular contributions. We cannot stress highly enough the possibility that the current Government offering of $1,000 on startup of Kiwisaver will not be around forever. So it is important to take advantage while it is there.
Furthermore for every child that is enrolled in the Kiwisaver scheme, Crest will donate $15 to the Upper Hutt Soccer Club junior committee for further development of the junior game.
So, grow your children’s future wealth, help grow Upper Hutt Soccer Club, all at no cost to you. Please complete the flyer provided and return to us if you wish to enrol your children
Yours sincerely
Alan Hewson

The story so far!!
As far as the juniors go...
We have been having some fun with the 7, 8, and 9's by playing different games and really focusing on enjoying the game while working on basic fundamental skills. We are both extremely happy with the player turnout as well as the parents and coaches that have been coming to watch. We have also had the opportunity to work with some 14s, 15s, and 16s, this is a lot of fun for us because we get to participate and do more coaching to help polish their existing skills and encourage them to develop some higher level skills. The indoor facility at Trentham is very suitable for all the training we are doing.
As far as the people go...
Ali (minger), Shar, Pete and Nicky have been nothing but perfect hosts. They take care of us and make sure that we always have what we need. Both of their families have taken us in without any hesitation and we are both very greatful for that!
Tony and Phil have really gone above and beyond in making sure that we are organized, always on task, and doing what we are supposed to be doing.
As far as the football goes...
The players and the coaches are just a great bunch of guys. They are all good players on the field as well as off. Brian and I feel like we’re both starting to fit in to the soccer and also make good friends. We both feel like this is a good team with great potential and it really falls on us, the players, to decide where this will end up. Everyone involved in the club has been first class to us and have made us feel welcomed and we are very thankful for that.
Thanks again,
Andy and Brian
(Note from editor) By the way guys you haven’t told everyone how scared and frightened you were watching the All Blacks perform the HAKA last week at the game!!

wendi's thoughts
To say it hasn’t been a roller coaster ride of emotions for players of the NZ Football Ferns leading up to the 2008 Olympics’ would be an understatement. We have all been training extremely hard and to be at the final stages of selection for the team to travel to Beijing is some testing times. The extended squad of 32 has just been cut to 22 with the final 18 to be selected and announced on 2 July. The team’s preparation for the Olympics starts next week with 18 players travelling to Korea to take part in the Peace Cup. From the final team selection on 2 July the team will pretty much be together until the end of the Olympic campaign. It’s going to be an intense few weeks for all who have taken part on the journey so far. For me it could be the end of my international career.
Other announcements around the country are the draw for the Fifa U17 Women’s World Cup which took place at Te Papa on Sunday 1 June. New Zealand has drawn Denmark and South American champions Colombia but must wait to find out who their first opponents will be.
As hosts and top seeds in Group A, the Young Football Ferns avoided heavyweights Germany and Brazil along with the yet-to-be-determined top qualifier from CONCACAF (North and Central America), but still face daunting tests against top European and South American powers.
It will be great for the Wellington region to be hosting Group D which consists of Brazil, England, Korea, CAF A. If these young sides are anything similar to the senior sides there will be some great football on display.
Thanks Wendi

Update for June 08
Well it’s hard to believe another month has come and gone and we are over half way through the season. As most of you would have noticed we are making leaps and bounds as a committee this year and we have done nothing but strive to make things happen for the club and its members on all levels.
Membership Cards
A new initiative that will be introduced in the next month or so is the release of our club membership cards. These will be the same material as your normal eftpos and credit cards so will be durable and will hopefully stand the test of time. In time we hope to have this membership card teamed up with our sponsors to enable benefits and incentives to you as our club members, and importantly identifies you as a member of our club
Please keep an eye out for the application forms in and around the club over the coming weeks.
Newsletter
The newsletter is up and running now and is proving to be a hit with our members, this has been introduced as mentioned before to provide a link between the committees and club members to keep you informed of the happenings at your club. If you have anything you would like to contribute to the newsletter at any stage please drop me a line and I am more than happy to make this happen. If you have had a change of email address please is sure to advise me of this change and if you have supplied your email address and haven’t received the newsletter as yet please let me know also
Bar unit
We have the design of a unit that will hang above the bar underway housing the likes of glassware, LCD screens, this will create a lot more room to work within for those that frequently work behind the bar at times. This is work in progress.
Projector Screen
The screen installation is still on the agenda and we hope to have this sorted for you in the coming weeks, for one reason or another this has been delayed slightly but is our intention to get it up and running for you shortly.
CCTV System
Our thanks once again to John and the team at Select Electrical and Security, the state of the art CCTV system that was kindly installed at the club is working well for us. We have had a few incidents that have happened over the last few weeks at the club after hours that have enabled us to refer images to the Upper Hutt police to pursue. Hopefully these characters will get the message.

herald hooligan
A highpoint of the season must be the 2-1 win against Premier table-toppers Tawa in the first game of the second round last week. This was the exact reverse of our first game of the season at their place where we lost 1-2 while having only 10 men for most of the match. Not having ten men for most of the match, and receiving no yellows either, is also a highlight as it has happened far too often this season. We have a majority of home games for the rest of the season and need to get some consistency going if we are going to challenge.
The Women’s Central League team is, and has been for most of the season in second place to runaway leaders Seatoun. Last Sunday we beat Marist, the only team to have beaten – or taken points off – Seatoun in the league, in the Uncle Toby’s (women’s equivalent to Chatham) Cup. Score 5-4 would you believe – and their keeper is the Capital Fed rep. one.
A sub-committee of hooligans behind the clubroom-end goal at Harcourt drew the ire of the Lower Hutt Women’s Central League goalkeeper by objecting to her abuse of the ball-boys and one-fingered salutes to the balcony on 8 June. She got the referee to move the sub-committee, already at least five yards from the line, back further, and claimed she feared for her safety from the balcony.
I can quite believe her. When a person is fearful for their safety, it is an automatic response to hurl abuse and one-finger salutes at the threat. This is calculated to pacify the ominous ones. Meanwhile, the feared and fearful balcony will avoid dark alleys where the acquaintance might be renewed.
The clubroom chiller has sprouted a new brand of ‘beer’ – Budweiser (US, not the real stuff). Next we’ll be importing the things they’re really good at producing - like rugby players.
Also looking overseas, Pommy Chris - Sharpies mate – went home to the UK for his sister’s wedding. He’d been there for less than 8 hours and Sharpie was told that he’s already really depressed about having to stay there until the wedding and wants to come back. And it’s their summer remember!! I’m sure it’s not Budweiser he’s missing.

editors' note
Thanks to all that have made a contribution to this month’s newsletter, you will notice that it’s getting stronger and stronger as time goes on. It’s proving to work as the tool we wanted it to in sharing information that keeps you all informed.
Win a kid’s Phoenix Shirt!

In this month’s issue you will notice the introduction of photos over the last few weeks from all areas of the club, these are fantastic particularly the images of the kids, if you have any that you would like shared in the next issue please forward on to me and any images received will go into the draw to win a Kids Phoenix Shirt (kindly supplied by RYOS) the winner will be announced in the next issue. We are looking for an action image of the children that expresses emotions of enjoyment on a Saturday morning/afternoon while playing soccer. We look forward to going through them.
Newsletter contributions
As I mentioned earlier thanks to those that have supplied contributions to this month’s newsletter the more we receive the more interesting the read for the members, please if you do get asked to provide a brief note, make a conscious to get this to me on time as it becomes extremely painful chasing these up from all over the club. If you can’t get it to me in time ask somebody else in your team/ group to do it for you that can as ultimately it’s your grade/team that misses out.
Till next month hope you have enjoyed the read
